 Salad lettuce belongs to the Group of fresh salads, as it does not contain bitter or acid substances. It is a two-year grassy plant, some of which are grown as leaf vegetables. This plant is native to Iran. The wild plant is found in Africa (Egypt, Ethiopia), as well as in Asia, from the East coast of the Mediterranean to Pakistan. In Iran and Western Europe the plant is used as a medicinal. 

 Due to its valuable properties — earliness, hardiness, good yields — salad is very useful either in dietary or in medical treatment. Its leaves contain almost all of the vitamins as well as mineral salts and organic acids. The lettuce contains vitamins B1, B2, PP, C, beta carotene, organic acids, and salts of potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sodium. The specific substance laktucin relaxes the nervous system, improves sleep, and reduces the deposition of salts. And pectin and folic acid stimulate work of intestines bowel and release the body of bad cholesterol.

The plant also contains iron salts lettuce that’s why it is recommended for treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Fresh lettuce juice diluted in water (1 to 1) helps in the treatment of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer of stomach and duodenum. Lettuce juice is also used for strengthening hair; and water extract of seeds of lettuce – for improving lactation. Eating lettuce, you can improve the blood circulation and normalize metabolism.
